The Cat’s Table, written by the author of The English Patient, is a beautifully written novel that will take you on a young boy’s adventure by ship from Sri Lanka to England via the Suez Canal in the early 1950’s. Along the voyage Michael meets a wonderful assortment of fellow travelers, some seated with him at the “cat’s table”, the least desirable table in the dining room. As the journey progresses, you learn more about these unique characters and the exciting escapades of Michael and his young friends. Heartbreaking, mysterious, and spellbinding—this story of childhood and the shift to adulthood and all that is left behind is a joy to read.
