This spring, the Beverly Public Library will be doing a community read of two books, The Mangrove Tree and Farewell to Manzanar.
Check out our “Read-alikes” on Pinterest.
The first book, The Mangrove Tree, is a picture book about The Manzanar Project, brain child of Dr. Gordon Sato, world famous scientist and Wenham resident. The Manzanar Project is dedicated to finding low-tech solutions to hunger and poverty by developing agriculture and aquaculture in salt water and desert areas, such as Eritrea. The basic building block of Dr. Sato’s initiative in Eritrea is the mangrove tree, which provides a base for an entire ecology of aquatic life, as well as providing lumber for fuel and construction and food for local livestock. Dr. Sato named The Manzanar Project after the Manzanar internment camp in which he was interred during World War II, despite being a native born third generation American.
The second book, Farewell to Manzanar, is the first person memoir of Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, who was also interred in Manzanar as a child during the war. This book was chosen because of its relevance to Dr. Sato’s similar experiences as an American of Japanese descent.
Dr. Sato will be speaking at Gordon College on Thursday, March 29 at the A. J. Memorial Chapel from 7:30 – 8:30 PM. Both the Beverly Public Library and the Hamilton-Wenham Library will present additional programs during the spring that tie into this Community Read.
