This fall, Beverly will be joining the Hamilton-Wenham Public Library for a community read of Tinkers by Paul Harding. Winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Price for fiction, Tinkers was inspired by Mr. Harding’s family history and is set here in New England. On November 16, Mr. Harding will be visiting Gordon College as part of the programming for this joint community read holding a book signing and reception from 6-7 PM followed by a lecture at 7:30 PM. Tickets are now available for purchase online until 3 PM on the day of the event.
Save that date, and stay tuned to our website for additional information on events and other aspects of this multi-community response to an incredible book.
Many thanks to all the children of Beverly who participated in the Let’s Hold Hands paper doll event held at the Library in February. The Let’s Hold Hands program was founded by author and illustrator Susan Roth as an outgrowth of her award-winning picture book Listen to the Wind. The program aims to foster world understanding in the coming generations.
The beautiful dolls made at the library have been part of a traveling exhibit and have visited museums such as the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the Peace Study Center in Baltimore. Special congratulations to Angelina (age 5) of St. Mary’s School, and Grace (age 7) of Centerville Elementary School. Their dolls will be displayed at the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt!
What challenges did Greg Mortenson face as he climbed K2, the second highest mountain in the world? What does it feel like to climb straight up the face of a mountain? Experience rock climbing on the Greater Beverly YMCA (Sterling Center)’s well equipped 25 foot indoor rock wall on Sunday, March 14 from 1 – 3 PM. There are four different routes, for all abilities for ages 6 and up. This event is free and open to the public.

We enjoyed this book immensely because there was a lot of action. It was great that Greg and his team built schools for the poor children in Pakistan and Afghanistan who were attending school outside in the bitter cold. This book tried to educate people in the United States that not all Muslims are evil or mean-spirited. Greg Mortenson was a very brave person since he was kidnapped once for 8 days and yet he still returned to Pakistan another time to continue aiding the people who needed his help.
