On January 12, a series of earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 6.5 to 7.3 devastated Haiti. The American Red Cross is working with the Haitian Red Cross and other partners to assist those affected by this disaster.
In the spirit of this year’s Beverly Reads title Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson, the staff members of the Children’s Room are reaching out to help others. Anyone interested in joining their efforts may add money to the jar at the Children’s Circulation Desk. All funds collected in this jar will be donated to the American Red Cross to aid their earthquake relief efforts in the nation of Haiti.

Come create your own “paper relief” artwork at the Farms branch! On Tuesday, February 9 from 4-5:30 PM, children’s book illustrator Giles Laroche will demonstrate his cut paper technique for children participating in the Collage Art Show, to be exhibited at the Farms branch in March.
A resident of Salem, Massachusetts, Giles’s “paper relief” technique involves drawing, cutting, painting, and gluing – sometimes up to 7 or 8 layers, giving his finished work a 3-dimensional quality.
This program is for children age 6 and older.
This program is full, but names are being accepted for the wait list.
The library is excited to host a visit by children’s book illustrator Susan Roth, whose unique paper and fabric collages illustrate “Listen to the Wind”, which she also co-authored with Greg Mortenson. Susan is the author of 40 books, most of which are illustrated with collages made from papers, fabrics, and other materials from around the world.
On Monday, February 1 from 3:30-5:30 PM, Susan will demonstrate how she makes her collages, and talk about the process of putting together a picture book.
