On Thursday, October 1 at 7 PM., Nancy Bonne, formerly the main library’s Children’s Librarian, and her daughter Susan Long will present a multi-media show of their recent trip to the Taktse School in Sikkim, India. The school was begun by Buddhist scholars, Sikkimese business people and the family of Pintso and Aka Lauenstein. Pintso and Aka, whose father is Sikkimese, became good friends with Nancy when they used the library as children. Now grown, Pintso, the principal of Taktse, heard of Nancy’s retirement and e-mailed, “When are you coming to Sikkim?” When Nancy said she didn’t want to leave her family, having just retired, Aka said, “Bring them!”
Aka made all the travel arrangements and Nancy, her friend Sarah Mowitt, Susan and her husband Gary and their sons Evan, 14 and Kyle, 10 flew to India. For three weeks, Nancy worked with Dichen, the Taktse School’s librarian, showing her how to make spine labels for books and de-mystifying the Dewey Decimal System. Nancy also had a daily schedule of book talks in the older grades and story times with the younger children. The family also went on a 2-day trip to other parts of Sikkim. Hear Nancy’s tale and view her stunning pictures (and an entertaining video clip!) in the Sohier Room of the main library. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Starting in October we have some very exciting new programs for elementary aged children: an Astronomy Club and a Graphic Novel Club! Both clubs are for children in grades 1 through 5 and will run October through May. No sign-up is required, and there is no attendance requirement – kids can join at any meeting, and come as many or few times as they wish. Both clubs will be run by Assistant Children’s Librarian Linda Furey, in the Children’s Room.
